Civil War Women

Another wonderful book from the quilt historian Barbara Brackman about the women and quilts of the Civil War, this time intriguingly combining history and How-To. She tells the stories of nine American women, ranging from abolitionists to freed slaves, who lived through the Civil War then describes and illustrates 1860s quilts which she thinks such women might have made. Each quilt is accompanied by full instructions for making them today so the book can be enjoyed both as a fascinating and authoritative history book and as an inspiring How To. (N.B. Some fabric stores are now stocking a range of reproductions of authentic Civil War fabrics for the benefit of makers seeking historical accuracy.)
