The World of Lucy Boston

Lucy Boston, who died in 1990, aged 98, left an enduring legacy in her house, The Manor at Hemingford Grey in Huntingdonshire, and the wonderful garden around it, her children’s books and over twenty remarkable examples of the art of English patchwork. Today, thanks to Lucy’s daughter-in-law, Diana Boston, visitors to The Manor can experience Lucy’s world for themselves as house, garden and patchworks are all available to be viewed.

Although it seems that the patchwork and quilting tradition in West Cumbria, in the far north west of England, was nothing like as prevalent and defined as in the North East,quilts and coverlets were certainly made here and a few of them have survived.

Mrs. Oxtoby’s Quilts - The Trunk in the Attic

One might think, in this day and age, that there were no more treasures to be unearthed in attics, that by now any hidden antiques or treasures had been searched out and sold on Ebay. Not so. When Mrs. Oxtoby’s mother died inn 2007 her house in Wigton, West Cumbria, had to be completely cleared and made ready for sale. In the attic, sure enough, there was a trunk.

The British Quilt Study Group (BQSG) was founded in 1998 by The Quilters' Guild of the British Isles. Its aims are to encourage the continuing documentation and study of the British quilt tradition. It brings together textile and quilt scholars and academics, and others with an interest in the history of British quilts.
